All Things ROOT: Add-Ons Galore For The Strategy Game

I’ve been on a tear with Root lately. Leder Games has got a lot of stuff available other than the base game, and I’ve tried out the Clockwork and Underworld expansions.

But there are peripheral add-ons that you can get from Leder Games that enhance the playing experience. Similar to exclusives that you’d get from a Kickstarter or deluxe editions of the game, these are premium components and board game pieces that players might consider if they’re particularly enjoying the game and want to elevate their tabletop adventures.

So, I’m going to discuss what’s available and how it adds to the Root gameplay, thanks to the generosity of Leder Games, who provided these review products.

Playmats for Fall/Winter and Lake/Mountain

These double-sided neoprene mats provide a luxurious alternative to the foldout cardboard maps in the base game and Underworld expansion. Each reversible map brings out the art of Kyle Ferrin in vibrant detail and it’s easy for cards and components to be moved across the smooth surface. These playmats measure approximately 22" x 22" and they will take up a sizeable chunk of the table but it’s worth it!

The Exiles and Partisans Deck

This deck introduces 54 alternate cards. This will switch things up in your Root games as new powers replace your typical cards. You’ll use the Exiles and Partisans deck instead of the base deck. These crafting cards took inspiration from the factions in the game and pretty much any fan of the game should consider this new deck.

For the players who are looking for a new way to revive your passion for Root or for ways to extend the variability of the game for as long as possible, this works just as well as a full expansion. It’s a relatively cheap method of infusing Root with an improved set of cards that function as an adrenaline shot of woodland fun.

If you play frequently, it’s an excellent addition.

Resin Clearing Markers

This is purely an aesthetic element to the game, but I’m always a fan of optional components that improve visibility and gameplay. The original clearing markers are flat cardboard pieces and their pale art can blend into the map from a distance. These large resin markers, though, are distinct and can easily be seen from anywhere around the table, thanks to the raised design and vibrant color.

They’re not essential, but the pretty components upgrade the look of the game a little bit and it’s quick to spot.

The Vagabond Pack

And if you want to upgrade your Vagabond game, then there are now meeples of all of the different factions to replace the thin cardboard markers on the Vagabond faction mat. Just like the resin markers, it’s a quality of life change that gamers will appreciate.

Also, the pack includes three new Vagabond character cards: Harrier, Ronin and Adventurer.

So there’s a gameplay bonus that further incentivizes you to buy the Vagabond Pack.

Neoprene mats, cards, markers, and meeple. It’s all available to augment your current game of Root. Expansions are one thing. Extra goodies are another.

What do you think, though? Interested in any of the Root peripherals?

Give a shout out in the comments if you want to hear about any other board games, and I can add them to the review list!
