CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 6 Review: COD Is Finally Back!

Review key provided by the publisher

It’s no secret that Call of Duty: MW3 was a huge joke that none of us laughed at. Luckily, Black Ops 6 is a return to form for this beloved franchise.

Campaign

This iteration in the Black Ops series is a welcomed one. Taking place in slightly more recent times, this game borrows action moments and just moment-to-moment combat scenes reminiscent of some of the best action films of the 90s. There’s a lot of care and attention put into gameplay this time around. Flourishes in how you can tackle an objective, give the player a sense of control over how they’d like to carry out the mission. This along with the explosive cast of characters make for an exciting time. Much more exciting than the lame-ass open-world missions of MW3.

Multiplayer

When push comes to shove, I’m a multiplayer girlie through and through when it comes to COD, but the Modern Warfare games have been my favorite for it as of late. And unfortunately, Black Ops 6 still doesn’t change my mind on that front. Though the new maps, modes, and movement systems help elevate gameplay, the combat still just feels lackluster compared to that of MW. The guns also just aren’t all that exciting to me this time around either, which makes unlocking them seem fruitless.

Zombies

I used to play a lot of zombies back in High School but I grew tired of the whole charade after a while. Luckily, Black Ops 6 manages to make zombies feel a bit more nuanced and enjoyable for me. The health bar for zombies was weird at first but became something I appreciated after a while. I also liked the more objective-oriented side of gameplay. However, I would say that the maps could be a little more exciting to play, as I just haven’t been blown away by maps at all in general with BO6.

Verdict

Though not a perfect Call of Duty title by any means, Black Ops 6 is the return to form that players deserved after the horrible car crash that was MW3. If anything, Activision and Co. could have only gone up from that, and let’s hope that Black Ops 6 is only a stepping stone to the great things to come from the franchise since Microsoft’s acquisition of the company and franchise.
