GET TO THE ORANGE DOOR First Impression: Quick Gameplay With A Few Things Slowing It Down
Get to the Orange Door is developed by a single guy named Andrew Smith and published by Hitcents. The title is a very bright neon-based FPS roguelike. It’s an attempt at an original roguelike experience while keeping the familiar shoot ‘em up and character upgrade aspects we all know and love. While the game is still in early access let’s see how it’s doing so far!
Gameplay
As far as I can tell there is a story peaking through the chaos but for now the gameplay is very fast-paced and it speaks for itself. You load in and there’s a main objective and some side objectives. The longer you take to finish the objectives the harder and more tense the game gets. There are danger levels that rise as you are in the game. You start with a pistol and you can find chests to give you ammo, kill enemies to get ammo, or search car trunks and trash bins. From the chests, you can find keys to open doors where you get the opportunity to get new guns or upgrade your weapons.
The game itself is pretty simple even though it all happens so fast. It’s a roguelike; you attempt the objective, you die, you restart, and try again until you finish. When you actually complete a run you gain premium currency that you can use for permanent upgrades. To complete an objective you will need to run and gun until you can’t anymore. Dash away or if you’re crazy dash towards your enemies. Run, jump, and wall run as fast as you can leaving enemies in the dust, all while picking off enemies and trying to make it to the end.
As far as I could tell, there was only one objective; Get to ‘the Orange Door.’ It’s a mostly linear objective, you spawn and you try to get to the end without dying. When you reach the objective it triggers an event where you’re swarmed with enemies and you have to eliminate them all before you can leave. However, there are also side objectives, like getting keys to unlock doors or finding and opening an Alpha chest.
The enemies have some pretty interesting designs if you can actually take a second to look at them. They’re known as constructs and they give off a cyber-like exoskeleton vibe. The constructs have a few different sub-types, there’s the lowly Drudge that is just the basic enemy to the more tactical Raptor that comes equipped with an energy shield on their arm and a ranged laser cannon. There are also larger boss-like constructs like the Mammoth with huge beefy claws and an armored head crest. All of them have unique attack patterns and different movement patterns. When you start at threat level zero you will only encounter the basic enemies and as you rise in threat level you will start to encounter the more threatening constructs to challenge you.
Expectations
The game has some kinks but they’re going to be worked out. It’s slightly laggy but for how fast this game moves I’m impressed by the fact that it’s only slightly laggy. So the game needs a little bit of smoothing but it’s nothing detrimental.
Content-wise, I’d like to see some additional objectives, weapons, and cosmetics. If there are only a few objectives to be chasing it’s going to get boring pretty quickly. The same goes for weapons, now there are a few different weapons already that will keep you entertained for now, but after a while, they could get stale. Cosmetics aren’t a big deal, but it would be nice with all the neon lights to at least be able to choose my colors.
Verdict
Get to the Orange Door has some potential to be a boredom cure! There is a little bit of smoothing out that needs to be done and some content that needs to be added but for an Early Access game, it is doing what they promised. It’s a fun game, and I will be keeping an eye out to see what is added for the full release.
