MLB HOME RUN DERBY VR Review: Not Quite A Home Run
Gameplay
MLB Home Run Derby VR is precisely what its name suggests—a simulation of the Home Run Derby. You have the option to play at any Major League Baseball stadium, where you'll spend 90 seconds swinging for the fences. The pitches are fairly standard, and the gameplay primarily involves swinging. Even on the pro batting difficulty, it's not overly challenging, and you'll likely hit almost every ball out of the park. Despite this simplicity, it's an enjoyable game to play with friends, competing to see who can hit the most home runs and perfect their swing techniques.
In addition to the core gameplay, MLB Home Run Derby VR offers a range of challenges that add depth to the experience. These challenges task you with achieving various milestones, such as hitting consecutive home runs or breaking home run records at specific stadiums. Completing these challenges unlocks new gear, including team-themed bats or stickers, which you can use to customize your player and enhance your performance.
Graphics and Audio
VR games on the Oculus Quest often face some graphical challenges, but despite that, experiencing MLB Stadiums from behind the batter’s box is quite surreal. However, in my view, the real highlight of this game is its audio. Hearing the announcers call out your home runs or the satisfying crack of the bat when you hit a powerful homer into the stands adds a level of immersion that is truly satisfying.
Feedback
If you're playing this game solo at home without friends or online play, the experience can feel somewhat limited. There's a need for more content to extend its appeal. Personally, I would have appreciated an explore mode allowing players to roam around MLB stadiums for a more immersive experience. Alternatively, a fully expanded MLB game within VR, where you can play complete baseball games, would have been fantastic.
Having more diverse gameplay options would likely elevate this game to a permanent spot in my library. However, as it stands, I might just download for social gatherings and parties.
Verdict
MLB Home Run Derby VR offers enjoyable moments as a party game, yet its long-term appeal faces challenges. The lack of variety in challenges across stadiums and static multiplier coins diminishes replay value. With a few updates and additional features, this game could undergo a significant improvement. However, at present, my recommendation would lean towards true MLB enthusiasts who may appreciate its current offerings despite the limitations.
