WWE 2K24 Review: Sports Entertainment At It's Finest

Review Key was provided by 2K Games

WWE 2k24 is another installment in the new era of WWE games. They have recently shown that their dev team has really been working towards something great. I wanted to do this review a little different and talk about every game mode individually and sort of rank them all while keeping it it a traditional review. Let’s see how this installment compares!

Gameplay

In WWE 2k24, there's a variety of game modes available right from the start! One of the standout modes is Showcase, where you get to relive iconic Wrestlemania matches with commentary from Corey Graves and appearances from wrestling legends like Hulk Hogan. It's a blast for wrestling enthusiasts! Back in WWE 2k22, the Rey Mysterio showcase was emotional and engaging, making me think it couldn't get any better. However, WWE 2k23's John Cena showcase fell short without voiceovers, leaving me disappointed. But WWE 2k24 is a whole different story! It takes you on a journey through 40 years of Wrestlemania, offering real insights from the superstars who lived those moments. It's truly the cream of the crop!

Then for those of you that like to imagine what it would be like to live out your own wrestling dreams, you can step into the ring yourself in MyRise! MyRise is a mode where you create your own custom superstar and get to play through your own wrestling journey. In Previous installments of these games the MyRise mode has just varied on whether you played it as a heel (bad guy) or a baby face (good guy). But this time around, not only is that the case but this time around you get TWO WHOLE different stories. In each of the stories you choose your super star is fully customizable, for example I made a very curesd attempt at Pikachu Libre, and you get to customize down to the little details in the entrances.

MyRise Character

For those craving competition, there is MyGM mode, which may seem daunting at first but becomes incredibly enjoyable once you grasp it. In this mode, you assume control of a wrestling promotion such as Smackdown, RAW, NXT, or even ECW. Your objective? Manage your chosen promotion for 25 "weeks" in a battle to maintain the highest ratings. MyGM mode supports up to 4 players, allowing for intense multiplayer action, or you can tackle it solo with 3 CPU opponents. Playing with friends adds an extra layer of excitement, as you can negotiate trades and strategies together. This mode is essentially a resource management game, reflecting the role of management in the wrestling world. You'll need to keep a close eye on everything, from booking costs to contract timelines and even superstar morale. Additionally, you'll have to consider factors like fan reactions and social media buzz about your show, adding depth to the experience. With its intricate mechanics and attention to detail, MyGM mode offers a deep and immersive gameplay experience that can easily captivate players for hours on end.

MyGM Mode

For the collectors among us, MyFaction mode adds a card-collecting element to the mix. In this mode, you'll open packs of cards to build your own "faction," which you can then use to complete challenges or engage in online battles. What makes MyFaction appealing to collectors is the opportunity to obtain special cards that unlock unique outfits for certain superstars. This mode provides a satisfying incentive for players to keep playing, with weekly challenges offering additional rewards and keeping the gameplay fresh. Whether you're a completionist or just enjoy collecting rare items, MyFaction offers a compelling experience that adds depth to WWE 2k24's gameplay.

In addition to the standard single-player and multiplayer modes, WWE 2k24 offers the MyUniverse mode, a versatile sandbox experience where you can unleash your creativity. In the Superstar mode, you assume the role of any wrestler you choose, deciding their fate in matches – whether they win, lose, or anything in between. It's a chance to shape their career according to your vision. For those who want even more control, the full sandbox mode allows you to take the reins of the entire WWE universe. Here, you can meticulously plan and book every show to your liking, creating dream matchups and storylines that cater to your imagination. MyUniverse mode offers unparalleled freedom, making it perfect for players who want to craft their own wrestling experience from start to finish. Whether you prefer to control individual superstars or the entire wrestling landscape, this mode ensures that WWE 2k24 has something for everyone.

Graphics and Audio

Rick Roode vs Ultimate Warrior - Showcase mode

The graphics in WWE 2k24 continue the trend of gradual improvement seen in previous installments, though there's nothing groundbreaking. While many character models closely resemble their real-life counterparts, some fall short of capturing their likeness accurately. Overall, the graphics are decent but not flawless, with occasional issues like physics glitches and animation delays.

On the audio front, the game shines with an impressive soundtrack curated by none other than upcoming DLC Superstar, Post Malone. Though the soundtrack is on the shorter side, it flows seamlessly and complements the gameplay experience well. Additionally, the announcing team deserves praise for their performance, providing timely commentary that adds to the immersion of each match. It's evident that a significant amount of effort went into recording commentary lines, making every match feel uniquely called.

Feedback

Overall, WWE 2k24 provided a highly enjoyable experience, but it's hard to ignore the lingering clunkiness that has been a characteristic of wrestling games for some time. While this might be considered a staple of the genre, it doesn't necessarily have to be that way. I believe there's room for improvement in terms of making the gameplay feel smoother and more polished.

Finding the right balance between realism and arcade-like fluidity is undoubtedly a challenge. Going too far in either direction risks compromising the authenticity or the fun factor of the game. However, with advancements in gaming technology and mechanics, there's potential to refine the gameplay mechanics to offer a more seamless experience without sacrificing the essence of what makes wrestling games great.

In the end, WWE 2k24 remains a solid entry in the series, but there's certainly room for evolution in future iterations to address some of these concerns and elevate the overall experience for players.

Verdict

WWE 2k24 stands tall as one of, if not the best wrestling games available today, boasting longevity that few others can match. It serves as a true tribute to the world of wrestling, offering an immersive experience that fans of the sport will undoubtedly appreciate. While it may not hold the same appeal for casual gamers as other sports titles, its depth and authenticity make it a ton of fun for those invested in the wrestling universe.

As a dedicated fan, I'm eagerly anticipating the additional content and DLC that will undoubtedly enhance the game even further. With its solid gameplay, extensive roster, and faithful representation of the wrestling world, WWE 2k24 remains a standout title in the genre, sure to entertain fans for years to come.
