This game had me at "Booster Goose." 88 Heroes tagline is "They called the best, but the best didn't show up," and I'm grateful for it because I think I'm going to love all 88 heroes in this game. Each hero has 88 seconds to complete their level and, as you can guess, there are 88 levels to complete. Should your hero happen to die before their level is complete, the next hero takes their place. I'm not sure if that hero then goes on to their level or not, but each playthrough will randomize which heroes you start the game with and the order they pop up.
