Today at the Xbox + Bethesda Showcase, Asobo Studios revealed their next game in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, A Plague Tale: Requiem, coming sometime in 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and even Nintendo Switch using Nintendo’s cloud-streaming technology. The sequel to their hit game, A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019), Requiem looks to be a continuation of that story but with dramatically bigger stakes.
Taking place in Medieval France in the midst of the Black Plague, Innocence saw a young girl and her brother struggling for survival while surrounded by death and pestilence. The cinematic trailer for Requiem features a writhing mass of rats swarming down the streets of a town directly toward the main character from the first game, Amicia, who faces down the hoard with a defiant look in her eyes. It then cuts to her brother, Hugo, in a different, shoreside environment.
The first game focused largely on stealth mechanics and careful timing to avoid dangerous situations. Limited combat opportunities were presented to players to encourage meticulous strategizing, but the trailer for Requiem hints at wider, gameplay possibilities. The cinematic trailer also suggests that Requiem will feature enhanced visuals, at the very least due to the more powerful hardware in next-gen consoles.
A Plague Tale: Requiem is the second, high-profile partnership Asobo Studios has made with Xbox. Last year they launched Microsoft Flight Simulator for PCs, with the release date for the console port also getting a reveal at the Xbox press conference. The conference was full of new reveals and surprises, including the arrival of Hades on Xbox consoles this August as part of Game Pass and Captain Jack Sparrow coming to Sea of Thieves.
