Square Enix kicked of their E3 2021 presentation on Sunday with their latest Marvel collaboration, Guardians of the Galaxy, developed by Eidos Montreal. The new game will follow a familiar looking band of heroes as they embark on a journey to save the galaxy from a catastrophic threat. Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot are all here with character designs and an overall feel that draws inspiration from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise. Eidos Montreal is telling a wholly original story with their game, described as a “bold third-person narrative action-adventure game which combines original storytelling with electrifying single-player gameplay.”
The reveal started with a trailer featuring both action and story content set to Bonnie Tyler’s hit song “Holding Out for a Hero” (1984) before switching to a lengthy section of gameplay. Guardians of the Galaxy will feature fast-paced, real-time combat where players will directly control Star-Lord while issuing commands to the rest of the crew to chain techniques and perform combo attacks. It will also feature a branching narrative where players will be given dialogue options that can dramatically alter the game’s story. In the demonstration shown Star-Lord had to make several decisions that not only impacted the mission but also the morale and potentially the loyalty of his team.
Eidos Montreal’s most recent release was Shadow of the Tomb Raider back in 2018, but they are probably best known for their work on the Deus Ex franchise starting with Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011. Their pedigree for making single-player action games is strong, and they’ll potentially continue that trend later this year when Guardians of the Galaxy releases on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and streaming via Nintendo Switch and GeForce Now on October 26, 2021.
