With the release of World of Warcraft: Legion the world is once again flocking back to the MMO they proclaimed "dead" not a year ago. While so many MMO's have come in gone since the game's launch in 2004, one game has persevered and was even released before the gold standard of MMO.
In case you were wondering, Runescape has been around since 2001 and is still around today...and it's a lot different than you remember.
I think the first time I played Runescape was around 2003. My younger cousin and I would hog my grandma's computer spamming the dancing emote for coins and griefing people only to get slaughtered in the wildlands. I played for a couple years then, but seem to remember falling out of it right as I went into high school. Now, 13 years later I have a top of the line PC and am using it to run a free to play MMO because I don't want to pay a subscription fee for one game. If you find yourself in the same boat, it's a GREAT time to get back into Runescape.
Earlier this year I wrote about how the game made some improvements to it's graphics (RIP dank meme gnome) and while it's not completely WoW level of quality, it's pretty damn close!
When I was a kid, I didn't really understand MMO's and their purpose. I usually just ran around and talked to people while killing small minions. Now that I'm an adult it kind of blows my mind how immersive this game is for a free to play! Of course, things have been added since I've last played such as...
- Special abilities and ultimate attacks
- New UI
- Voice acting (for certain quests)
Mind you I'm not too far into the experience but I've already completed a couple story missions and it's scratching that MMO itch thus preventing me from dipping into the wallet for WoW. Playing it now, it's no wonder this game has withstood the test of time.
Personally, I love the new look and feel of the game...but there's something for people who don't. That's right, forward thinking Jagex already has legacy servers for those who want the exact same experience they had way back in 2001! I would be there myself but the company didn't give me this computer to run low end 2 decade software so I gotta justify the price tag somehow.
Regardless of what other people are saying about World of Warcraft Legion I'm telling you that Runescape is still here and it's still as great as you remember.
