Modern Retro Done Right: CRASH BANDICOOT 4

Retro Geek Dream

In recent years remasters, remakes and HD treatments of games have been unleashed and overall, the results vary wildly. From the incredible, top tier Shadow of Colossus remake for PS4 to the horribly clunky Contra: Rogue Corps, it’s like rolling the dice when it comes to how your beloved gaming series are to be treated. There are dozens of retro gaming titles that I would love to see with a modern touch and luckily, Crash Bandicoot is a series that is being done right.

In a perfect world, there is what I’d like to call the “Modern Retro” treatment and in a nutshell, that is solid, old school gameplay with modern graphics, effects, and sounds. Crash Bandicoot 4 is a perfect example of modern retro done right. It still has the simple yet stellar retro gameplay, humor, animation and sound of the original series but all those attributes are pumped up to a modern level of quality without losing the original charm and gameplay. While it sounds simple, very few remakes/series has been able to pull this off.

The best part about these types of games is they transcend age, generation, and genre preference gaps. A great game is a great game, mostly due to gameplay, but having a modern touch is just the icing on the cake. Whether you played Crash back on the PS1 or you are brand new to the series, there is so much to love and enjoy, and that my friends, is Modern Retro Done Right! Crash 4 receives my highest recommendation and it would be the perfect stocking stuffer or gift for anyone now or during the Holiday season.
