I grew up with RollerCoaster Tycoon on my family’s computer. I used to pick up and drop unsuspecting park attendees and relocate them around the different amusements I had created. I know more sadistic gamers plopped them into the water, but that was never my bag. I also employed an army of unfortunate janitors who had to clean up all of the vomit from sickened riders of my crazy rollercoasters. Good times were had by all.
Considering those gaming moments from my younger years, it’s pretty remarkable seeing how much the genre has matured.
Planet Coaster: Console Edition is out now on the current-gen PlayStation and Xbox; it’s also ready for the new console launches. And, man, there is so much that you can do.
They are really letting players decide what they want to do with the park. The game features a career mode, challenging scenarios to complete, and a sandbox mode that allows total freedom. If you were hoping for a theme park game to just pick up and play, this is it. You can use blueprints to build things quickly or just be as creative as you want with the rides, the attractions, the landscaping. Nothing is out of reach.
The game even boasts a Frontier Workshop where players can check out each other’s creations and download whatever they want for their own parks.
It’s grown a lot since the claw days…
You can buy Planet Coaster now for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
