Psychonauts 2 is finally coming out later this year with a firm release date of August 25, 2021. The famously troubled Double Fine Productions sequel got a new trailer as part of the Xbox E3 showcase earlier today, showing off some of the new “minds” players will get to explore in this long-awaited entry in the Psychonauts series. The game will pick up right after the events of Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a VR title that came to PSVR and PC, and features main character Raz embarking on a new adventure to save the Psychonaut Organization.
The trailer features gameplay from a wide variety of environments in which Raz must solve wacky puzzles, fight dangerous enemies, and master his Psychonautabilities in order to save the day. Double Fine’s notorious sense of humor is on display as well, with one particular exchange about bacon featuring prominently. Psychonauts 2 is a huge visual step up from its predecessor, owing in no small part to the 16 years of technological advancements between Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2.
Psychonauts released in 2005 to critical acclaim but underwhelming sales, which stalled development on any potential sequels. After a decade Double Fine was able to announce Psychonauts 2 in 2015 with a crowd-funding campaign that raised approximately $4 million dollars. Double Fine announced their acquisition by Xbox at Xbox’s E3 presentation in 2019, joining the Xbox Game Studios stable of developers.
Psychonauts 2 will be available on August 25, 2021, for Xbox and PC for purchase and via Game Pass as well as for other major consoles and PC marketplaces. Psychonauts 2 wasn’t the only big announcement out of Xbox’s E3 press conference this year, including the reveal of Forza Horizon 5 and the first look at Halo Infinite multiplayer.
