During March 2016, we were made aware by the Hollywood Reporter that Straight Up Films had acquired the film rights from Square Enix for the Thief franchise. It was to be adapted by screenwriters Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, who brought us screenplays like Misconduct and Not Safe for Work.
Based on the film producer's latest description update, it seems as though the film is slated to be released at the same time as the next Thief game.
"Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation. Steeped in the steam-punk world created by the video game, the film will tell a new chapter in the storied world of the series’ hero."
IGN has apparently approached Square Enix to confirm these suspicions, but they are refusing to let any secrets out of the bag at this point. It makes one wonder if Straight Up Films possibly leaked this information out by accident, or maybe for further publicity, but it does give us something to think about and hope for.
Let us know what you think: do you feel the game and film should have the same story, or would you prefer that they be separate stories completely?
