Ed Boon, the creator of the Mortal Kombat series, made his appearance at Summer Game Fest on behalf of developers NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros. Games to showcase some gameplay from Mortal Kombat 1. Fans got their first glimpse at a rebooted roster and the reveal of what they’re calling “Kameo Fighters.”
The reveal for Mortal Kombat 1 was more than we could have asked for! We got to see some fatalities, some X-rays, characters, and some actual gameplay. We got to see some familiar faces from the Mortal Kombat series including; Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Kitana, Mileena, Hollywood Superstar Johnny Cage, a young Raiden, and a returning face - Kenshi. In our first look at Kameo fighters, we get to see some more familiar faces like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Stryker (I’m surprised by this one), Kung Lao, and Goro. We still don’t know exactly how large the roster will be, but from some preview footage it looks like there will be about 16 Kameo Fighters.
This storyline follows after the happenings of Mortal Kombat 11, which if you can recall, involves a full timeline reset. We can see this with plenty of references in this trailer. We see the very Hollywood version of Johnny Cage before he became a soldier, and we see a very young and not Thunder God Raiden.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be available on September 19th for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
