Knockout City, the competitive dodgeball game from Velan Studios, is shutting down later this year. The 4v4 multiplayer title initially launched as part of the EA Originals line in May 2021 before going free-to-play and independent in June 2022. The game pitted players against one another in frenetic dodgeball matches filled with specialty balls, unique throws, and the ability to turn into a powerful dodgeball yourself.

The announcement, which came via a blog post on the Knockout City site, outlines Velan’s reasons for sunsetting the game and what players can expect before the game goes offline on June 6th, 2023. Through the course of developing and publishing the game, Velan realized that they wouldn’t be able to make necessary improvements while also supporting the live game. As a result, they’ve decided to “take a step back and pave the way for Velan to do what we do best by innovating.”

The upcoming Season 9 will be the game’s last, running from February 28th to May 23rd. Real-money purchases will also be sunset on February 28th, but the in-game economy will be adjusted to boost experience and rewards for all players. From May 23rd to June 6th Velan will host a farewell event with even more rewards, giveaways, lore drops, new merch, and a competitive tournament. They’ll also be releasing a player-hosted PC server to allow fans to keep playing Knockout City even after the servers have gone offline.

Knockout City is available for free until June 6th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
