OBLIVION OVERRIDE Review: A Roguelite At Its Finest

Oblivion Override is a side-scrolling action shooter roguelite by Humble Mill. A lot of indie devs create games in this style so it makes the genre a little crowded, but every once in a while a game like Dead Cells comes around and surprises everybody. Let’s see how Oblivion Override sets sail on the sea of roguelites.

Gameplay and Story

A lot of roguelite games focus 98% on the game play and sprinkle in the story when they can, and that’s not, not the case here. The story definitely feels like an after thought, but who am I kidding we’re not playing roguelites for an in-depth story. With that being said, the whole concept of being a virus trying to influence is pretty cool.

As far as gameplay goes, Oblivion Override is exactly the kind of game that sets itself on top of the crowd. Being challenging but not frustrating and having an array of different weapons to choose from. Not only are there different weapons that create different combos, but there is an option to change the mech that you are using, each with their own ability.

With multiple levels with their own enemy types ending with a number of different bosses, there’s a bunch of different routes and strategies you can employ. With each level having multiple doors at the end so there’s a different boss to fight after you’ve already beaten one helps keep it from getting stale.

Graphics

I really enjoy the graphics in this game, they create a certain cyberpunk vibe that fits perfectly. The enemy designs are really impressive too. I love the fact that they have a visible health meter built into their designs and it doesn’t look forced. Each mech has a unique design that looks vaguely like a Gundam and their abilities fit their design. Nothing feels out of place and everything feels intentional.

Feedback

Anything missing from this game could be fixed with updates over time. Eventually adding in more weapons and mechs would make this game infinitly replayable. The game is really fun and there are already a bunch of different mechs and weapons to choose from, adding more would only improve the game.

Verdict

Oblivion Override is a solid roguelite game that successfully stands out in the crowd. Nothing about this game feels unfinished and nothing about this game feels like it’s a knock off. It’s a ton of fun and it’s challenging but not to the point of frustration. This game is a must have if you like games like Dead Cells. I will be here patiently waiting for some DLC.
