Focus Entertainment and Auroch Digital are set to bring a new story from Games Workshop’s legendary Warhammer 40,000 to PC and consoles this May, as Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun gets its official release on May 23rd.
The game is a brutal homage to retro shooters, set in the grimdark universe of eternal war, interdimensional demons, Mad Max orcs, and space cathedrals.
The player takes on the role of a Space Marine, the biologically and cybernetically-augmented walking tanks that form the most elite forces of the Imperium Of Man. Space Marines have one purpose in life, to wage war, so it’s pretty clear what the gameplay involves.
Boltgun is a retro-inspired shooter drawing inspiration from old classics like Doom and Quake, and will transport the player forward to the year 40,000, and back to the 90’s at the same time. Enemies take the form of grotesque 2D sprites, though a modern coat of paint gives the game 3D-rendered levels that give plenty of visual polish.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is available to pre-order now for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. The game will also be available for Nintendo Switch on launch.
