Square-Enix released their financial quarter Q&A, and president Yosuke Matsuda talked a lot about the Nintendo switch saying,

“We base our development resource allocations on the unique attributes of each platform. In particular, Nintendo Switch makes it easier for us to leverage our back catalog of assets and expertise, so we want to be proactive in creating new IP and rebooting past titles for that platform.”

Could this mean that we could be seeing either backward compatibility with older Square-Enix titles like Final Fantasy? Or will completely new titles make it’s way to the Switch console?

Those who understand the past relationship between Square-Enix and Nintendo, would know that it has definitely been rocky. During the Nintendo 64 era Nintendo refused to leave the cartridge behind, which ultimately left Square-Enix in a tough spot with Final Fantasy VII as the game’s large scale would be too large for the Nintendo 64 cartridge to handle. They opted to put their game on Sony’s Playstation platform instead as the disks were able to store a lot more information. The game eventually fit onto 3 CDs and sold 11 Million copies worldwide.

Needless to say, Yosuke is showed interest in the Nintendo switch and sees the value it is bringing to the gaming market.

“Nintendo Switch is seeing rapid uptake, and we welcome the arrival of such a platform. We intend to be proactive in our development efforts given that it’s a platform that is well suited to the mid-sized titles at which we excel.”

While it’s unclear what games will be released on the Switch, it is definitely the perfect platform for Square-Enix to develop on as they have created games for the DS and the PSP in the past.
