A year has passed ever since Nintendo introduced us the hybrid console that lets players experience their favorite games on the go, or in the comfort of their own homes. Now, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 14 million units worldwide ever since its launch a year ago. In fact, the Switch even outsold the lifetime sales of its predecessor, the Wii U, who managed to put out 13.5 million units in a span of 6 years.
The website DualShockers reports that the Nintendo Switch was able to triple the sales of the PS4 during its first year in Japan. When the PS4 was first released in its home country back in 2014, the console was able to garner a total of $1.1 million, which puts the Switch ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 4 by $2.5 million as Nintendo’s console ended the year in Japan with a total profit of $3.8 million.
The solid launch of the Switch can be attributed to numerous things, The first and foremost of which is the console's ability to seamlessly switch between a traditional hand held console, to a home system that can be hooked up to a TV. Furthermore, Nintendo was able to push several successful first-party titles such as Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, and the award-winning title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Switch’s ultimate success was seen by several third-party developers that brought titles such as Skyrim, Doom, and Resident Evil Revelations to Nintendo’s console.
It’s will be interesting to see how the Switch will fare against other consoles in the future. Hopefully, Nintendo will be able to maintain the momentum by further increasing the system’s library of games.
