Varric Thetras, the rogue dwarf from Dragon Age, who also writes about his many adventures in the game, is going to get published in real life. Varric first appeared in Dragon Age 2, and became a companion to the Inquisitor in Dragon Age Inquisition. His famous novel, “Hard in Hightown”, which is a best seller in the world of Thedas, is crossing over from the fictional world of Dragon Age, and is set to be published in the real world.
The book will be called Dragon Age: Hard in Hightown, and is slated to be released in July and will be published by Dark Horse Books together with Penguin Random House as the distributor. Fans of Varric will be able to purchase the hundred pages book at just about $20. The illustrated novel will provide access to Varric’s ficitional story that will give fans his perspective on the events that transpired between rival factions in the city of Kirkwall, where Dragon Age 2 took place. Check out the publisher’s decription of the book:
“Twenty years of patrols have chiseled each and every stone of the Kirkwall streets into city guardsmen Donnen Brennokovic. Weary and weathered, Donnen is paired with a recruit so green he might as well have leaves growing out of his armor. When the mismatched pair discover a dead magistrate bleeding out on the flagstones, they’re caught up in a clash between a shadowy organization known only as the Executors and a secretive group of Chantry agents-all over some ancient artifact.”
Although Varric’s writing career only serves as a minor detail in the game, the release of this book is definitely a treat for fans Dragon Age’s lore. The Dragon Age Wiki also confirmed that Varric is already in the process of writing the sequel to Hard in Hightown, which will be called “Hard in Hightown 2: Seige Harder”. There were also rumors circling the land of Thedas about a third book, that is now confirmed was not written by Varric but by his rival author named Worthy. This rivalry was even included as a side quest in Dragon Age Inquisition where Varric asks the Inquisitor to investigate the source of the unofficial third book from his series.
Dragon Age: Hard in Hightown will be co-written by Mary Kirby, who is a lead writer in Bioware and is responsible for the existence of Varric in the Dragon Age series. You can pre-order the book here.
